Excerpt from my 2009 e-book, Perfectibilists (254-5, 285 notes):

Bassus, Thomas Maria, Baron de (1742 Poschiavo, Switzerland – 1815 Sandersdorf, Germany)

Hannibal/Minos

In 1787 police searches of the Baron’s fortress in Sandersdorf turned up incriminating proof in opposition to him and the Illuminati. He was an amazing recruiter for the Order. In letters to Weishaupt he boasted of his conquests at Bozen (within the south of Austria), initiating “the President, the Vice-President, the principal Counsellors of Authorities, and the Grand Grasp of the Posts.” Later, throughout his travels by way of Italy, he despatched phrase of getting initiated “his Excellency the Rely W…” in Milan. Afterwards he proceeded to Pavia in hopes of enlisting the Professors on the College.40

The next is a brief biographical sketch, from Italianopera.org correspondents in Sondrio:

The baron Thomas Maria Freiherr de Bassus was born in Poschiavo, Switzerland, in 1742. He studied jurisprudence on the College of Ingolstadt. Weishaupt (code title Spartacus), who based the Order of the Bavarian Illuminati, on the 1 Could 1776, was his schoolmate. De Bassus practiced for a 12 months as an Adviser of court docket to Münich in Bavaria. In 1767 he grew to become Patron [Podestà] of Poschiavo, a activity already taken from his father Giovanni Maria. He married Cecilia Domenica Massella, from a household of notaries. On the untimely loss of life of his father, he inherited the palace of piazza del Borgo in Poschiavo, identified at this time because the Albrici Lodge, along with his rich possessions in Valtellina and in Val di Poschiavo. After he had engaged the place of authorized Assistant in Tirano (within the province of Sondrio, beneath the ability of Grigioni), de Bassus grew to become Podestà of Traona in 1781 and inherited in that interval the products of the German household department, e. g. the feuds of Sandersdorf, Mendorf, Eggersberg, Harlanden and Dachenstein.

Getting into the Order of the Bavarian Illuminati with the code title of Hannibal, de Bassus had the project, just like the pseudonym suggests, to unfold Illuminism past the Alps, above all within the Three Leagues (Swiss) and within the north of Italy. De Bassus acquired a printing firm that, with the assistance of the Illuminatus typographer Joseph Ambrosioni, grew to become the middle of the diffusion of Weishaupt’s concepts from Poschiavo. The version of de Bassus (1782) of the primary Italian translation of the Werther of Goethe, written by Gaetano Grassi from Milan, was well-known.41

De Bassus’ printing home in Poschiavo was, based on the revered Italian historian Franco Venturi, one of many first facilities for the dissemination of revolutionary concepts as much as the eve of the French Revolution in 1789.42

In 1787 Bassus grew to become the patron to composer Johann Simon Mayr (1763- 1845), and the latter was quickly employed as a music trainer in Sandersdorf Fort.43

Bassus joined Weishaupt’s Order in 1778 and was made an Areopagite in 1779.44

40. Barruel, op. cit., p. 605. “Grasp of the Posts” refers to Thurn und Taxis.

41. It was printed in Grigionitaliani Notebooks in July 2000 and on the Web shortly thereafter. The location with the English translation is now defunct, nevertheless a duplicate of the web page nonetheless survives for posterity on the servers of the dear mission referred to as the Internet Archive; the Italian model is
located here.

42. Franco Venturi, Riformatori lombardi nel Settecento, Torino, Einaudi, 1978, Quantity I, p. 196, cited in “La prima traduzione del Verter di Poschiavo.

43. “Johann Simon Mayr (1763 – 1845)”. The Bassus household brewery was additionally situated at Sandersdorf Fort, since 1550. Immediately, the brewery continues and on the official brand for the corporate (de Bassus Schlossbrauerei zu Sandersdorf) there may be displayed prominently that very well-known fortress by which the Bavarian authorities discovered the incriminating paperwork in opposition to the Illuminati.

44. Schüttler

By the way, De Bassus’ alias/pseudonym was not “Minos” as Hermann Schüttler had presumed — which I had repeated in Perfectibilists — in his e-book, Die Mitglieder des Illuminatenordens, 1776-1787/93 (1991). The next Illuminati members, nevertheless, did take the title “Minos”: Franz Dietrich von Ditfurth and Philipp Anton Freiherr von Redwitz.

Schloß zu Sandersdorf; Nachtrag von weitern Authentic-Schriften welche die Illuminaten-Sekte

The authorities raided the premises of Areopagite Tommaso de Bassus, at Sandersdorf Fort, discovered correspondences and different incriminating proof. Printed in Could 1787, it was titled:

Nachtrag von weiteren Originalschriften, welche die Illuminatensekte überhaupt, sonderbar aber den Stifter derselben Adam Weishaupt, betreffen, und bey der auf dem Baron Bassuischen Schloß zu Sandersdorf, einem bekannten Illuminaten-Neste, vorgenommenen Visitation entdeckt, sofort auf Churfürstlich höchsten Befehl gedruckt und zum geheimen Archiv genommen worden sind, um solche jedermann auf Verlangen zur Einsicht vorlegen zu lassen [“Supplement of further original writings concerning the Illuminati sect in general, but particularly concerning its founder, Adam Weishaupt, which were discovered during the visitation carried out at the Baron Bassus’ castle in Sandersdorf, a well-known Illuminati nest. These writings have been immediately printed and taken to the secret archive by order of the Elector, in order to present them for inspection upon request.”]

On Pages 39, 47 n.99, in Perfectibilists:

Aside from minor discrepancies, the Illuminati didn’t deny the authenticity of the printed paperwork; they objected to the way in which by which it was edited. In a number of pages throughout the Originalschriften des Illuminatenordens, and Nachtrag von weitern Originalschriften, the editors, understandably, couldn’t resist appending scurrilous footnotes in condemnation of the Order. A extra basic objection from researchers and historians, nevertheless, is the truth that omissions are blatant all through the texts. Whereas reproducing letters and official reviews, the editors normally censored the actual id of any noble or different high-ranking particular person listed, making it troublesome from the start to achieve an entire image of the Order. One of many final historians to examine the unique unedited material (on the Secret Archives of the Royal Home of Bavaria), was René Le Forestier. In his 1914 tome, Les Illuminés de Bavière et la Franc-Maçonnerie Allemande, Le Forestier declares unequivocally that each Originalschriften des Illuminatenordens and Nachtrag von weitern Originalschriften have been “scrupulous copies” of the fabric then housed within the archives. Aside from the censoring of the particular names of some initiates, there was nothing neither falsified nor suppressed within the ensuing publications of 1787.99

99. See Le Forestier, op. cit., p. 532 and n. 3. Tragically the unique paperwork as soon as housed within the Bavarian Archives for all to examine have gone lacking. In line with Monika Neugebauer-Wölk, “all the assortment was dropped at the Munich Geheimes Hausarchiv and has been misplaced for the reason that Second World Battle” (see her “Illuminaten” entry, op. cit., p. 595). Reinhard Markner — co-author with Neugebauer-Wölk on Die Korrespondenz des Illuminatenordens Band 1: 1776-1781 (Tübingen: Niemeyer, 2005) — maintains the unique paperwork have been destroyed throughout a WWII bombing raid on Munich in 1944 (e mail communication: Jan. 17, 2006).

Daniele Papacella, in Dai Bassi ai de Bassus : la riscoperta di una dinastia poschiavina, p.15, captions an early portray of Bassus, situated on the Poschiavo Museum in Engadine:

“Tommaso Francesco Maria de Bassus (1742-1815) – On the age of 38, the native of Poschiavo formally turns into a part of the Bavarian the Aristocracy. To actually receive the title, he should battle, for in Bavaria the legitimacy of this succession is contested by two second cousins. Solely a prolonged authorized battle allows him to entry the belongings in 1781. On the finish of the dispute, he proudly poses in a crimson livery. This isn’t a army uniform, however a method that signifies his loyalty to his new lord: the Elector Prince of Bavaria [Karl Theodor].”

Tommaso Francesco Maria de Bassus (1742-1815)

In 1781, Baron de Bassus was some of the necessary members of the Illuminati, and by 1786/87 had amassed and saved official communications and correspondences from throughout the highest degree of the Order. The portray captures for posterity what he regarded throughout this significant decade, as does the next.

ilbernina.ch: “Baron Tommaso de Bassus (1742-1815) along with his little son Giovanni Maria. Each are indicating, one on a globe and the opposite on a map, the native land of the household: the Three Leagues and Valposchiavo – Oil on copper plate by Jakob Dorner, 1783.”
